Best St. Louis Spots To Get Your Carb Fix

Giving up carbohydrates is so 2005. Now it's all about moderation and enjoying your favorites. And what better way to indulge than with the best breads, pretzels, challah, dough and pancakes one can find? We've made it easy. Now it's up to you.

Breadsmith

If you can dream up a type of bread, most likely Breadsmith carries it. Whether you stick to traditional favorites like 100% Whole Wheat or Focaccia, or venture out with beer bread (a take-off of a vintage 19th century German recipe utilizing a classic dark beer) or vanilla oat crunch granola bread (crunchy oat clusters with a hint of vanilla), you won't leave disappointed. On Fridays, stop by for Vanilla Egg Challah, which is perfect for a delicious French toast breakfast. Each loaf of bread is made from scratch everyday.

Pretzel Boys

Tim Garvey brought the Philly-style pretzel to St. Louis in February, and by all accounts, it was the smartest decision he's ever made. Original Philly-style softies are twisted and baked throughout the day and can be combined with several different cheeses and dipping sauces. For an easy snack, try the Pretzel Pups -- bite-size pretzel snacks perfect for pre-workout fuel.

Whole Foods Town & Country

The saying that 'you've seen one, you've seen 'em all' does not apply to the Whole Foods at Town & Country Crossing. One of the largest markets in the region also has one of the most amazing bakeries. From pretzel breads and butter croissants to chocolate chip scones and fluffy ciabatta buns, the scent of fresh-baked bread saturates the rest of the store as if it's calling your name.

Gus' Pretzels

Don't even bother coming to Gus' if you're trying to watch your carb intake. It's pointless. The pretzels are so big, warm and fresh that it's impossible to stop at one. Try one of their traditional pretzel sticks, or if you're really up for a dare, splurge on a custom-made St. Louis Cardinals logo pretzel that is quite simply, the biggest pretzel you've ever seen.

Original Pancake House

Let's be honest. If you're going to devote an entire meal to carbohydrates, what better place to do it at than the Original Pancake House? These aren't just pancakes. These are works of art. From buttermilk to Swedish to Georgia pecan, you won't taste anything more sinfully divine than these fluffy masterpieces.

I hear Pretzel Boy's is running an online sweepstakes to win a free pretzel everyday for a year. Talk about a fun twist to an already twisted website! They say it ends on national pretzel day on April 26th. I didn't know there was a national pretzel day, but this is a good way to celebrate, for sure. No offense to Gus, but like Jessica said, Tim Garvey and his gang know what they're doing…totally up a notch.
